What does making, creating or eating ‘raw food’ actually mean? Everywhere you turn there seems to be raw this or raw that.
When I hear the word ‘raw,’ the first word that springs to mind is ‘wholefood’. To some, it may mean that everything you eat will be uncooked. In fact, it just means that although the majority of your food will be in its whole, raw state, between 25% and 40% will still be cooked. Raw and living foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).
“Raw foodists” believe that foods cooked above this temperature have lost their enzymes and thus a significant amount of their nutritional value and are harmful to the body, whereas uncooked foods provide living enzymes and proper nutrition. Proponents of a raw food diet claim that there are many benefits to eating raw foods, including weight loss, more energy, clear skin, improved digestion and improved overall health.
I don’t see eating ‘raw’ as a diet of any kind but as a way that we can incorporate a healthier way of eating into our already overly processed lifestyles. There is plenty of information out there if you want to take rawism to the extreme by limiting certain foods from your diet but I like the idea of including them into my diet….and the fact that they usually fuss-free to make!
