Ah, and we are back to school for 2016! Wow, seriously where did January go? The children are back to routines, school work and working through life challenges and experiences.
It was interesting to note on an email recently from Pinterest that one of the most trending pins at the moment are in the form of STEM projects. Admittedly, this was mainly a USA finding but is certainly beginning to pick up steam here in Australia as our curriculum is quickly adapting to reflect this. So, what the heck is STEM is anyways?
“STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. We focus on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.” CLSnet.org
STEM touches every aspect of our modern day lives, from our smartphones to the technologies that enable us to explore the world around us and outer space. A STEM-literate student is not only an innovator and critical thinker, but is able to make meaningful connections between school, community, work and global issues. There is solid evidence to suggest that the fastest-growing and highest-wage jobs in future years will be in STEM fields and all employees will need to utilize STEM skills for problem solving in a wide range of industries.
So, in a nutshell it’s going to vastly affect our children’s ability to understand 21st century dynamics and advances.
With this is mind, I thought I select a few cool projects (that we tried over the holidays) to perhaps engage your kids in and blow those holiday cobwebs out with!
