We have been on family holiday in Hawaii and we kickstarted our trip on Maui. If your into standup paddleboarding then Maui in July is the mecca and place to be. Not only is it mid summer and warm (goodbye Australian winter) but it is also the windiest place on earth – making it perfect for SUP downwinding and catching bumps and glides all the way down (or is it up?) the northern coast.
The infamous run is called the Maliko run which begins at the Maliko gulch (just past Paia and on the way to Jaws) and can take you as far as the harbour in Kahului. There is plenty of wildlife with massive turtles expectantly popping their heads up, flying fish, tiger sharks and a reef which helps create the wave peaks along the coast.
Although primarily this is a family holiday, we are not ones that do sedentary ones. Hence why it is perfect location to catch some rays, explore the bays and sights with the kids and relax with fellow sup’ers. Special thanks goes to Naish for supplying my boards and making this trip possible.
One goal was to get out there with my husband to share the glides together, not easy when you’re holidaying with kids. Luckily enough a generous friend offered her time to entertain while we excitedly made the most of the opportunity and perfect conditions to get out there. Here is the result.
Enjoying Maui at it’s best having fun on our Naish SUP boards catching wind generated runners
We are spending the rest of the week in Waikiki surfing and playing in the lagoon and pools. Making the most of the weather before we return to chilly, but always beautiful Gold Coast.
