Wow, what a weekend, it is a little crazy to think how far I’ve come in the sport of SUP since I started just over a year ago and how I would be living without it in my life..
The Australian SUP titles were held over the weekend, with the surfing component, technical race (in and out through surf) and long distance race. I competed in the both the tech race and distance race and somehow won both!
It was super windy on Saturday which isn’t ideal for anything really at the beach, especially standup paddle boarding because you kind of act like a human sail on water but it was a great test of skill and stability. Molokai 2013 SUP winner Terrene Black was in second and SUP surfer extraordinaire Shakira Westdorp took third.
There was no time rest on Sunday as we had to line up for the marathon paddle from Broadbeach into the Currumbin creek mouth, about 13 km. It was damn hot so full camelbaks were necessary to get us through the tough race without too much wind assistance. I finished ahead of training partner and top chick Ange Jackson and Terrene finished in third.
Surfing Australia did a great job running the event which also included community team events. Thanks to Naish for their support, Peter Dorries for his guidance in training and the Gold Coast SUP crew for the fun times!
